If you compare the cabinet designs, the '61 model had an entire front baffle board with the speaker mounted in the middle. It was suspended at the top and bottom while the sides were able to move. The baffle board itself would become an extension of the speaker and help the volume ring a little louder.

The '57 GA40 and Maestro GA45T cabinets had smaller baffle boards that were mounted to the inner top face and bottom.

I love my '61, but dig the classic looks of the '57 GA40 and GA45T cabinets too.

Bad couplings...oh yeah. I think that every Gibson that was made with Black Beauty caps suffers from leaky DC and loud hum.
They are all great sounding caps only if they still function correctly.

I'm not a complete expert on Gibson amp production years, but I think the change in cabinet design was around in '60.
