Subject: Re: heyboer OT question

I only have experience with a Heyboer 18 watt clone OT. I replaced a Hammond 125E with it, and yes, sort of. It doesn't *add* anything, but it doesn't restrict the frequency response as much as the Hammond. The 18 originally used very beefy hifi OT's and my Heyboer is a clone of that transformer. The oversized OT is one approach and I can see why people like it, it gives a really big sound and doesn't compress the dynamics, etc., but I also like the sound of a slammed lo-fi OT in a guitar amp that imposes its own limited frequency response on the signal. Certainly worth experimenting with different output transformers - generally, the wider frequency response is considered "better" from a fidelity point of view, but when it comes to guitar tone, all bets are off.
