I have built a few amps and they sound fine to me. I have a few BF deluxe builds and they are loud as hell, either MM or tranny's from David Allen.
I amp getting into champ designs now, between 5-10 watts.
Maybe your hearing is getting bad after all those years of live playing. I know I lost some of my hearing sitting next to an engine in an M-113 APC in the Army without ear plugs. I also lost some in one ear doing live sound in a low ceiling place because of the drummers piccolo snare.
