Update: On closer examination I discovered that a treble bleed cap had been installed. Theoretically this should make no difference to the sound when the volume is on 10, but snipping it off has eliminated that extreme high end I was hearing. I believe this was the problem.
Raising the pickups and lowering the strings has brought the overall volume of the guitar up. It still has more of a "spanky" sound than the Pink Paisley (and much more than the 1954), but it definitely sounds like a Tele now, rather than some cheap gat being DI'd into the board.
