Over the years, people have sent me speakers they bought off the internet that turned out to be a lot different than
what they had expected. The most common problem, of course, was that they were blown. The second most common problem was that they
were reconed by someone who only does HIFI speakers, or just recones speakers without regards to the technical requirements for guitar amp speakers.
Lately, I have discovered that a few so called vintage speaker dealers are lurking on our bulletin boards and when someone mentions their need or desire
for a particular speaker, these guys email them with offers, most of which have prices that are way too inflated.
So, time for action.
Here are some steps you can take to ensure you are getting a good deal or will get what you really want.
Make sure the seller double boxes the speaker with plenty of packing material. Also make sure the seller insures it.
As much as I despise UPS, they are the only ones you'll have a chance of collecting for damages. So, I would have it shipped UPS and don't forget the packing material comments.
If you are solicited for a speaker purchase from our bulletin boards, contact me. I'd be happy to discuss the purchase and the seller with you.
If you have an uneasy feeling about the seller but want the speaker, you can have it sent to me for checkout. I will evaluate it for you and make a determination whether it is what you are expecting.
There is no charge for this service other than the cost of the shipping to forward the speaker to you. If it turns out to be what you are looking for and is in good working condition, I will remag the magnet, touch up glues, and thoroughly test it.
If the seller does agree to send it to me and it turns out to be blown, an incorrect recone, or not as represented, the seller will be responsible for the return shipping of the speaker to him.
If the seller refuses to send the speaker to me first, that should be a sign that something is wrong with it.
And lastly, we would be happy to escrow your payment for the speaker with no service charge. Getting a seller to agree to that is another story.
