Everyone came from somewhere originally so the they were here first argument is just that, an argument.

What I find intriguing is that people tend to react rather violently to both sides of the agument.

As far as the aaussies are concerned yeah they came from someplace else, basically from england on penal transport originally or as admisnistrators for the penal colony.
all that is long ago and the only native peoples are the Abos who probably were in Australia before most other people were wherever their ancestors first settled.
But the Aborigines for the most part are not oput there screaming for the colonials to give back the land, have pretty much settled on their own place in society and are pretty laid back in general as I understand it.
The controversy over recent immigration legal or illegal is something that has been around forever. Every generation has had to deal with it one way or another and while a lot of old animosities are still around for the most part they have and still do deal with it.

On the one hand I see a lot of the animosity as being trumped up political posturing while on the other hand the idea that if you don't want to play by the rules you shouldn't get into the game attitude that fosters a lot of the " if you don't like it go back where you came from " as more of the same or a valid point when it comes to dealing with the society you want to be a part of.

Funny thing if we were talking about marriage then what would be the reaction to the old saw about the wife marrying the husband for what he is then right after the ceremony beginning to try and change him into something else ? Hell that happens with simple relationships as well.
The same thing applies for the newcommers who came for what was there then begin trying to make it into something different once they are inside.

It's really not worth all the fuss since in a hundred years it will be a new situation with new people on both sides of the argument just as that is true about the present establishment which in the past was made up of people who were fighting against each other in the same way.
