Ray - I agree that Drummer#2 has a groovier feel. Its not everything, but the slower tempo helps. Listen to "Frosty" compared to some of the slower/mid tempo shuffles.
All the greats seem to have this dancing thing going on between the big 3 (kick, snare, hats).
There are a ton of great drummers and some have helpful stuff on their websites. This guy talks about the swing cymbal pattern and writes it out: http://www.paulwertico.com/articles/jazzridecymbal1.php
Oh! Also YouTube (search by name or shuffle drums): The King (Bernard Perdie): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gujufbGoS20&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9hq7IEqyKQ&feature=related

For practicing swing try this: count the triplets (one-two-three, one-two-three...), now put the emphasis on the three (one-two-THREE, one-two-THREE...), now make the 'two' silent (one- -THREE, one- -THREE...). Good practice for swing feel.
I hear you on the timing effecting everything and playing with a stiff drummer kills all the fun, but we're all in it together, so we have to have out sh#t in a pile too. If it ain't groovin', its losin'. Later - Jon
