I have something similar that was inherited from my parents. Lots of good old 78s from all sorts of venues. Classical to popular jazz even some blues. I have a nice rendition of take the A train that I should listen to again sometime but I would have to dig the old parlor windup out of the attic as well as the record file and crank her up to get the real feel.
I also have a collection of Irish Come All Yes that is a blast on st. Pattys day and even once began to learn how to play the penny whistle part. Not a stretch since I once was learning BAgpipes ( need to strat all over again though ) and fooled around with a fife when I was a guide at Ft Ticongeroga back in the sixties.
In the 78 collection there are some of the early release copies that came out on cardboard with a plastic surface on one side only. I think that's the format I have a copy of Yes We Have no Banannas on.
Then there is a collection of birdsongs that was put out by the audobon I thik way back when. I found a modern version at the bookstore of the NJ Audobon society on cassette and it's all probably on disc now.
I also think there might be some Spike Jones in the collection but it has been a long time so maybe my memory is off and that was on a 33 1/3 that I no longer have.
What was that series something or other Motzart where the group played calssical music on home made instruments they cobbled together from all sorts of things you could find around the house ? French horns made from funnels and tubing and obes from music stands... that sort of stuff. Almost like spike jones who did it a decade or so earlier but classical not pop.
When the Stones first began coming to the states they used to frequent the NY public library and a few other collections of old reordings there and get a lot of material from the jazz and blues artists they found. It was a major influence on their music from the start.
I like that eventually a lot of this was rerecorded on 33 1/3 disc like Mikinley Morganfield for example.
Some of the novelty tunes though are a real hoot and fun to listen to. I think this was an influence on some of the pop bands in the sixties like Nitty Gritty dirt, Dr Hook, even bands like the Holy Modal Rounders and the Fugs , Captain Beefheart just to name a few .
