A lot of the spam or trojan senders use an e-mail message that could be something of interest to the person they send it to to get Malware onto your computer.
Best rule is not to open anything from an unknown sender of course and to have protective security to prevent anything getting through if you do that by accident.
Filtering both incomming and outgoing mail helps stop it coming in and helps not to send it on to your online correspondents if it does get through.

I know a few people who did not have proper security and got hit then whenever they went online and tried to use their e-mail program they were sending out malware to everyone on their list. Fortunately they were informed of the problem and managed to remove the malware but some people just don't know or even care.

Remember that there is always a new programmer out there creating something malicious to mess up everyone else.

Fortuneately most of the spammers are not that sophisticated but the real bad guys can be very devious and slip things through all the time until they get caught.

Be careful it.s dangerous out there....
