In addition to what Dr Bob has said you should try to remove the wax finish first.
There are a number of products for this and some old time recipies as well.

Try looking in a search like this one :

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=removing+wax+finish+from+wood&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7

The first real link recommends two products that are supposed to be the best for removing furniture wax.

I believe that ammonia is used for a lot of floor stripping but comes with a nasty smell and needs to be well aired.
something that disolves the wax to where it can be wiped off is probably the way to go them after it dries follow Dr Bobs suggestions for tooth etc. and try glueing a smaple in an inconspicuous spot to see how well it takes. if it works then you can always remove the sample and do a real recovering job.

You can also try making up a wood sample in the same way you did the cab , clean it off, and try the covering material and glueing before tackling the real cabinet.

Just a few suggestions to get you started.
