rough up the wood with some heavy sandpaper to give it some teeth or
bite to accept the glue that's going to hold down the tweed or tolex.
Probably best to almost go down to the bare wood, because the wax
finish can cause havoc when you try to glue to it.

I would use 60 grit to start off, then maybe 150 grit to get some of the
digs out from the 60 grit. These digs can and will show up as
depressions under the tolex or tweed if you don't get them all out.

I strongly recommend hide glue (1:1 mixture of hide glue to water) for
the adhesive.
