Did a diy detuned 1x12; during the material selection and building process used a rubber ball mounted on a stick as a drumstick to "hear" the wood. Definitely different wood has different tone. Ended up with qtr. sawn straight grain fir, in part because it had more of "thump" compared to a "ping" of pine and kind of a "thud" of birch ply. And went with a 1/2 inch ply floating baffle that was braced to keep it stiff.
