I'm re-fretting a 4001 and I have to agree with Scott. Dunlop #6230 is the way to go.
You may be interested to know that 6230 works well for Martin acoustics, Fender electrics, banjos, and mandolins.
I'm betting Rickenbacker came up short on jumbo wire on day and said, "Hey, let's use narrow wire on the bases... we've got tons of it."
