Some people wind the old style P bass pups with the Formvar wire which gives it That sound. More girth and growl.
For a smoother sound with a clear clean output noting beats a good old Duncan quarter pounder.
But the old P bass sound is great. A company called Nordstrand is not as well known but is used by a lot of bass players. Lindy Fralin and Duncan Antiquity(which are aged) pickups are all wound to get that original split pickup P bass sound.
