Subject: Watts are Watts: No, its speaker efficiency

Watts are a measure of power dissapated not apparent loudness.A 100 resistor diisaates 100 watts and its totally silent. So a more efficient speaker at any given wattage will be louder. The measurements you are looking for, is ( ) db 1 watt at 1 meter and then its actual power handling in watts.

For example a speaker with 93 db 1watt at one meter would be half as loud as a 97 db 1 watt at one meter even though they may both be rated for 100 watts of power. Also it takes 10 times the number of watts to double the apparent loudness level.

Finally, ported, sealed and open back cabs will influenece the apparent loudness also.

If its loudness you want, look for more efficient speakers.
