I'm a lefty that plays righty. I notice that most every right-handed kid I teach (art, not music) picks up my guitar and plays/holds it lefty.
If he is a true hardcore lefty, I wouldn't force righty on him, but there are many many examples of lefties who play righty out there so if it was me, I'd try to encourage him to play righty.... and that's from a lefty!
