Definitely righty. There are just not enough left handed basses laying around to pick up and play during his career. He will miss out on a lot of playing on basses other than his own.

The dominant hand thing is a non-issue due to the dexterity requirements for both hands. Ask Mark Knopfler. Asking your son what feels more comfortable when he has no technique yet is coddling.

The only downside to a lefty playing righty is that a lefty will probably suffer cuts, bruises and sprains on his left hand more often throughout his life than his right because he is a lefty. Because of this he may have a higher probablity of missing a gig or two than righties playing right handed. As a rightie, if I injure my dominant hand I can still play.
