Rotten,
Since you use both hands to play I would have him play righty. There are just a lot more right handed instruments out there and it makes lessons a lot easier. I write w/ my left hand but play righty and though it was slow going initially w/ coordinating my non-dominant hand to pick it came w/ practice. Having your dominant hand on the fretboard I think helps because it is natuarally more agile. Lots of great lefties play righty. Nels Cline...Fripp...Steve Morse...all have fantastic picking chops. Practicing is the key more than which hand you write with.
