IF he has good motor control in his right hand so that his picking attack is comfortable, he would be better off playing 'right' handed, imho. Many lefties are gifted with being ambidextrous. I have found that it is the picking hand which motivates beginners..if they aren't comfortable in that hand it is a obstacle that is hard to overcome.
